The Big Ol’ Media’s Attack on Sarah Palin

Posted by karmalily on October 30, 2008

According to a report from the Culture and Media Institute, an organization whose objective is to “preserve and help restore America’s culture, character, traditional values, and morals against the assault of the liberal media elite, and to promote fair portrayal of social conservatives and religious believers in the media,” the media’s negative stories on Sarah Palin are causing the American people to view her as “unfavorable.”

The report, titled “A Study in Character Assassination: How the TV Networks Have Portrayed Sarah Palin as Dunce or Demon,” makes the claims that the reason Sarah Plain is losing support in the polls is due to overwhelmingly negative media segments on TV.

From the report:

CMI found that during the study period, the media crafted three principal narratives about Palin. 1) Palin is a dunce lacking the qualifications and intellect to be Vice President. 2) Conservatives are revolting over the dunce’s nomination. 3) Palin is a demon, little more than an attack dog victimizing Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Yikes! Who is negatively portraying who here? I never once heard a reporter refer to Palin as a “demon.” And for some reason I doubt the possibility that the media worked together to criminalize Palin’s intelligence.

Part 1 of their report, that the media portrays Palin as stupid, is “proved” by the fact that the media repeatedly showed the worst parts of Palin’s interview with Katie Couric and that they left out her most successful quote, in response to being asked if she was a feminist:

I do. A feminist who believes in equal fights. I believe that women, certainly today, have every opportunity that a man has to succeed and to try to do it all, anyway. And very, very, thankful that I’ve been brought up in a family where gender hasn’t been an issue. You know, I’ve been expected to do everything growing up that the boys were doing.

Sidenote: Sarah Palin a feminist? Hah! A feminist doesn’t force rape victims to pay for their own rape kits, cuts funding for low-income mothers, doesn’t support emergency contraceptive, and is governor of the state with the highest percentage of sexual abuse. Plus, when asked the same question by Brian Williams of NBC, she said this:

“I’m not gonna label myself anything, Brian. And I think that’s what annoys a lot of Americans, especially in a political campaign, is to start trying to label different parts of America different, different backgrounds, different… I’m not going to put a label on myself.”

Sounds like a feminist to me. (Please note the sarcasm)

Part two discussed the liberal media’s attention on conservatives who do not support Palin. According to CMI, the media completely ignored people like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, who were supportive of Palin. Because, like, they are totally serious journalists.

Finally, part three’s title was this: “Palin Is an Obama-Attacking Demon.” It sounds like something from The Onion. But, alas, it is not. And the section’s first sentence is laughable: “With attacks on Palin’s competence blunted by her debate performance, the media switched to a new approach: depicting Palin as nothing more than GOP presidential nominee John McCain’s attack dog.” They use examples such as her accusation that Obama works “with a former domestic terrorist who has targeted his own country” (which just isn’t true).

CMI says that they could only find two positive segments out of their sample. They defined positive as “stories that included more elements placing Palin in a favorable light than elements criticizing her.” Could it be because she’s does indeed have more negative traits to offer than positive? I think so, but then again, the CMI would just say I was another proponent of the “liberal media.”

At the end of this report, CMI concludes that the media serves to elevate Obama while showing his opponents “in the worst possible light.” And acknowledging Saturday Night Live on the news? “As if frivolous entertainment belongs in the evening news.” Surely, a frivolous report such as this would know.
